The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) is warning electricity consumers in Tamale, Northern Region, about the dangers of purchasing counterfeit electricity meters.
This warning comes after reports of fake meters being sold in local markets have increased.
Last week, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) issued a statement cautioning the public against importing and selling meters on the market.
These fake meters pose significant risks to consumers and the integrity of the electricity supply system. According to Ali Simon Jarana, Northern Regional Manager of PURC, the unauthorized meters have not undergone necessary testing and calibration by NEDCo.
As a result, these meters do not meet standards set by the Energy Commission and Ghana Standards Authority.
Customers who use them will experience inaccurate billing and expose themselves to electrical hazards.
Jarana urged consumers to be vigilant when acquiring electricity meters, emphasizing that only certified meters should be used to ensure safety and compliance with regulatory standards.
PURC plans to undertake public awareness campaigns to educate consumers on the importance of using verified equipment for their energy needs.
Consumers are advised to report suspicious activities or offers related to electricity meters to the relevant authorities to protect themselves and their communities from fraudulent practices.
