The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not intervene on behalf of individuals arrested by the police for their alleged involvement in disturbances at a parliamentary primary in Walewale.
The primary, which was contested by incumbent MP Hajia Lariba Zuweira Abudu and Dr Kabiru Mahama, was annulled by the Electoral Commission after ballot papers were snatched, disrupting the sorting and counting process.
The police have arrested one person in connection with the incident, and the NPP has expressed its support for the police’s actions.
At a press conference, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong emphasized that those found to have caused chaos in the electoral process would face the law.
The NPP is a party that believes in the rule of law and internal democracy, and will not undermine peace and stability, Frimpong noted.
The National Executive Committee is set to meet on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, to decide how to address the situation.
Frimpong assured that the meeting would produce a decision that seeks to unify the party in the constituency, reconcile issues, and ensure the party retains its seat in Walewale.
The decision will be made ahead of the closed-door nomination deadline on Friday.
Frimpong stated that the party will give helpful support to the Ghana Police Service and anyone found to have caused chaos will be dealt with according to the laws of the country.
The NPP will not make any pleas on behalf of those arrested, as the party is not known for violence and believes in internal democracy and the rule of law.
