The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has condemned the government’s community mining scheme, labeling it a cover for illegal mining activities.
Vice President Professor Ernest Yorke highlighted the severe environmental damage caused by illegal mining in major mining communities.
In an interview with Citi FM and monitored by kumasi.city, Yorke emphasized the urgent need to address the issue, attributing the problem to a lack of proper supervision of the community mining scheme.
He warned that the health implications of unchecked illegal mining pose a significant threat to the nation.
The GMA, along with other health unions and associations, urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to impose an immediate ban on all small-scale mining operations, regardless of whether they are legal or illegal.
They also called for stronger regulatory enforcement to clamp down on individuals who violate the ban and swift prosecution of offenders.
