The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Tema has fallen victim to a theft involving a crucial transformer.
During a routine inspection for a power outage, officials discovered that a 100KVA, 33/0.433KV transformer, worth approximately GHC75,000, had been vandalized and stripped of its components at Asutsuare Junction.
The transformer was left in disarray, with parts removed and scattered around the site. ECG officials promptly reported the incident to the Doryumu Police Station.
Regional Engineer for ECG Tema, Ing. Michael Buabin, expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the significant inconvenience and financial loss it causes.
“The damage disrupts power supply for customers and forces us to redirect funds from other projects to replace the stolen equipment. The total cost to replace the transformer and its components is expected to exceed GHC100,000,” he explained.
Ing. Buabin appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone who witnesses such acts or encounters individuals trying to sell stolen parts to report them to the authorities to help prevent future thefts.
