The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Water Resources Commission have called for the immediate arrest of individuals and entities financing illegal mining operations in the Densu River near Kyebi in the Eastern Region.
The Densu River, a critical water source for over 1.5 million residents in Accra, is under severe threat from these destructive activities.
The illegal miners have blocked and diverted the river’s flow, jeopardizing water access for numerous communities.
Speaking to Channel One News, the Eastern Regional Director of the EPA, Addo Okyere, described the situation as a national crisis and urged swift action to address the problem.
“The destruction of the Densu River is a serious matter. This river, which serves a vast population from the Eastern Region to Greater Accra, is being attacked by illegal miners. There is a real risk of the river drying up or becoming polluted if we do not take decisive action,” Mr. Okyere stated.
He emphasized that the arrests should not be limited to the laborers on the ground but should also target the financiers behind these illegal operations. “We need to identify and apprehend the individuals who are funding these activities,” he said.
