The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is set to elect its flagbearer today, September 4, 2024, as part of its preparations for the December 7 elections.
This election comes after the party worked to address and resolve internal divisions that had previously hindered its progress.
Two candidates have emerged: Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma, the National Chairman, and historian Yaw Anokye Frimpong. Both have been approved by the party’s vetting committee.
A third potential candidate, Ivor Kwabena Greenstreet, had shown initial interest but did not submit nomination forms.
The congress will be held concurrently in all 16 regional capitals, with results compiled at the party’s headquarters for final announcement.
The CPP is under pressure to meet the Electoral Commission’s filing deadline for candidates. Critics have pointed to ongoing disunity as a cause for the delay in convening the congress.
Recently, the party has faced internal strife, leading to resignations from key national executives, including Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantua.
However, the election committee is confident that the issues have been addressed, and the party is ready for the upcoming elections.
