Sinner Defeats Paul to Advance to Medvedev Quarter-Final
- Advances despite fire alarm delay.
- Reaches first Grand Slam quarter-final.
- Continues streak of consecutive quarter-finals.
World number one Jannik Sinner delivered a stellar performance to defeat Tommy Paul 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 and set up a quarter-final clash with Daniil Medvedev at the US Open. The match, played on Arthur Ashe, saw Sinner overcome early errors and a double break deficit in the first set to dominate Paul in the final set.
Earlier, Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, made a strong statement with a 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 win over Nuno Borges. Sinner and Medvedev, the last Grand Slam champions left in the draw, are set for a rematch following Medvedev’s five-set victory over Sinner at Wimbledon in July.
Sinner, who is dealing with a recurring hip issue, remains hopeful about his physical readiness for the upcoming match. Despite a challenging season with a few hard court losses, he recently won the Cincinnati title and was cleared of doping allegations.
Daniil Medvedev reached the US Open quarter-finals for the fifth time in the past six years. The fifth seed overcame a brief interruption caused by a fire alarm in the building housing the electronic line-calling team. Despite being broken once and trailing 2-1 in the third set, Medvedev quickly recovered, breaking back and winning five of the next six games to secure his place in the next round.
The delay occurred because the US Open relies on Hawkeye technology for line calls, with no on-court line judges present. The building was briefly evacuated due to the fire alarm, but play resumed after a short pause, allowing Medvedev to reassert control and advance.
Medvedev was interviewed on court by Nick Kyrgios, who was the last player to defeat him before this quarter-final stage at Flushing Meadows. Medvedev joked about their past match, expressing his commitment to working hard and staying competitive.
In other matches, Britain’s Jack Draper secured his first Grand Slam quarter-final spot with an impressive straight-sets victory over Tomas Machac. Draper will next face 10th seed Alex de Minaur, who overcame Jordan Thompson in a four-set encounter. De Minaur, who dominated the first set but faced a stronger challenge later, is the first Australian since Lleyton Hewitt in 2004 to reach three consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals.
