No Law Bans You from Marrying More Than One Person – Counselor Lutterodt

Popular Ghanaian counselor George Lutterodt has made headlines with his recent assertion that Ghanaian laws do not explicitly prohibit polygamy. Speaking on the United Showbiz program aired on UTV on Saturday, August 31, 2024, Lutterodt clarified his stance on marriage laws in Ghana and offered insights into cultural and legal considerations surrounding polygamous relationships.

According to Lutterodt, while there is no law in Ghana that explicitly bans marrying multiple partners, cultural and religious factors play a significant role in such decisions. “If you are polygamous and not a Muslim, do not engage in civil marriage. Do the customary. And the customary can go beyond four…probably twenty. You can do it. Because there is no law in this country that bans anybody from marrying more than what you want to do. The law is that you are breaking a rule if you are not taking good care of the spouse. It’s part of the Domestic Violence Act,” he stated.

Lutterodt also addressed the broader implications of marriage practices and the role of women in relationships. He criticized the notion of women depending on men, asserting that it is inappropriate for women to be financially dependent on anyone other than their fathers. “It is wrong for any woman to depend on a man. No woman was created to depend on a man…biblically, legally, socially, and traditionally,” Lutterodt said. However, he acknowledged that it is acceptable for wives to rely on their husbands.

Furthermore, Lutterodt discussed the impact of polygamy on family dynamics and societal structures, emphasizing the need to understand the responsibilities and challenges associated with having multiple spouses.
