KNUST Sued for Ghc1M by Visually Impaired PhD Applicant Over Discrimination Claims

Isaac Anin Baah, a visually impaired PhD applicant, has filed a lawsuit against the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for alleged discrimination and neglect in their admissions process.

Despite successfully completing a Master of Science (MSc) in Disability and Rehabilitation Studies at KNUST, Isaac’s admission to the PhD program was revoked twice without explanation.

Isaac’s lawyers sent multiple requests to the university seeking clarification, but received no response, prompting him to seek legal intervention.

The lawsuit, filed at a high court in Kumasi, alleges that the university’s actions were unjust and discriminatory.

Isaac is seeking compensation of one million Ghana Cedis for the distress and lost opportunity to pursue his academic goals.

He is represented by ROSEFORD ADVOCATES, with lawyer Carruthers Tetteh citing breaches of the Persons with Disability Act 2006 and Act 715.

Isaac questions the university’s commitment to inclusive education and the Sustainable Development Goals, which promote equitable quality education.

He had received official admission letters and instructions for medicals, fee payment, an interview invitation, and orientation before being informed that his admission was an error.

The lawsuit argues that revoking Isaac’s admission without justification suggests discrimination based on his disability.

Isaac is demanding a declaration of negligence, compensation of one million Ghana Cedis, and legal costs, among other reliefs.
