GWCL Apologizes for Inconsistent Water Supply in Cape Coast

Story Highlights
  • Ghana Water Company apologizes for water supply issues in Cape Coast.
  • Galamsey activities pollute Pra River, reducing water intake.
  • 60% of catchment capacity silted, compromising water quality.
  • Company seeks stakeholders' help to address issue.

The Management of Ghana Water Company Limited in the Central Region has issued an apology to its customers in Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities.

The apology comes after recent water supply challenges in the area, which have caused inconvenience to customers.

According to a press release dated August 31, the challenges are due to a demand-supply gap caused by inadequate raw water received at the Sekyere Hemang Treatment Plant.

The plant’s reduced water intake is a result of pollution from galamsey activities along the Pra River, which has reduced water embarkment to the barest minimum.

About 60% of the catchment capacity is silted due to illegal mining, compromising the quality of the raw water.

The plant is currently recording an average turbidity of 14,000 NTU, far exceeding the designed 2,000 NTU for adequate treatment.

As a result, the plant is only able to produce 7,500m3/day, a quarter of its installed capacity.

The Management has assured customers that they are engaging all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the problem.

They have appealed to residents to join the fight against galamsey on the River Pra, especially during the festive period.

The company has urged residents to report any illegal mining activities to their community leaders or local assembly and support initiatives to protect water bodies and promote sustainable water use practices.
