Hiplife music expert Root Eye has weighed in on the recent debate sparked by Nana Kojo Mula’s article, “10 Artists Essential to Ghanaian Hiplife,” which has generated significant controversy.
Root Eye acknowledged that while Stonebwoy may not traditionally fit within the Hiplife genre, the award-winning artist’s contributions to promoting Ghanaian music on a global scale should not be overlooked. This statement follows Stonebwoy’s expressed dissatisfaction with Mula’s piece, which was published on the Grammy website on August 20, 2024.
The GRAMMY article, which explores the history and key figures of Ghanaian Hiplife music, has drawn criticism from Stonebwoy, who took issue with his exclusion from the list.
In a recent phone interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim, veteran Ghanaian reggae/dancehall artist Root Eye praised Stonebwoy, noting his significant achievements that have surpassed those of many of his predecessors.
“I have stopped calling him Stonebwoy. I’m calling him Honourable Satekla because he’s at the moment musically the greatest Ghanaian music ambassador. After all, this man is sending us places where we never thought we would be,” Root Eye remarked.
Root Eye continued, “The guy is living the dream that most of us had and couldn’t attain. We are living through him, we are living out dreams through this guy, so we cannot water down his contribution or the role he is playing for us at the moment.”
