MTN Warns MoMo Users Against Weak PIN Codes
- MTN Ghana has issued a stern warning to MoMo users
- MTN urged customers to create complex PIN codes
- The campaign is called the MTN MoMo Fraud Roadshow
MTN Ghana has issued a stern warning to Mobile Money (MoMo) users to avoid using their date of birth or mobile phone numbers as their MoMo PIN codes.
The company emphasizes that these easily guessable codes pose a significant security risk and can make users vulnerable to fraudulent activities.
The warning was part of an anti-mobile money fraud campaign held in Accra, aimed at educating MoMo users on safeguarding their accounts.
MTN urged customers to create strong, complex PIN codes to protect their MoMo balances.
“Using your date of birth or mobile number as your PIN is a major security flaw,” said Rena Ankrah, Manager for AML-CFT and Head of Fraud at MTN Ghana. “Fraudsters can easily exploit this information to gain unauthorized access to your account.”
The campaign, known as the “MTN MoMo Fraud Roadshow,” commemorates the 15th anniversary of MTN Mobile Money in Ghana. It highlights the company’s commitment to securing customer transactions and preventing fraud.
Ankrah stressed that fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics and urged customers to be vigilant. “It’s crucial that our customers understand the risks involved and take proactive steps to protect their accounts,” she said.
One common scam involves fraudsters claiming that customers have won an award from MTN.
Ankrah reminded users that MTN only contacts prize winners through official company channels and requires them to visit a nearby MTN office to claim their prizes.
She advised customers to be cautious of any other numbers contacting them with such claims, as they are likely fraudulent attempts.
MTN Ghana emphasized that it will only contact customers through its official number, 0244300000.
