Champions League Gets a Shake-Up: New Format, New Draw

Story Highlights
  • 36 teams in a single league
  • Top 8 teams go directly to the Round of 16
  • The final match would be played on May 31, 2025, at Allianz Arena, Munich

The UEFA Champions League draw took place on Thursday in Monaco, unveiling the inaugural season of the revamped format.

Unlike previous seasons with eight groups of four, this year’s competition features 36 teams competing in a single “league” setup.

Teams were placed into four pots of nine based on seeding, and each team will face off against two randomly-drawn opponents from each pot, with one home and one away game.

The top eight teams from this league phase will advance directly to the Round of 16.

Teams finishing between 9th and 16th will enter the knockout phase playoffs as seeded teams, while those in positions 17th to 24th will compete in unseeded playoff ties to secure a spot in the Round of 16.

Defending champions Real Madrid, who clinched their 15th title with a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the final, will look to repeat their success.

The final of this season’s Champions League is set for May 31, 2025, at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
