Voters’ Register: “Better Wake Up And Do Your Job Properly” – Mahama Chastises EC

Story Highlights

Transferring voter names without informing them can lead to significant confusion on Election Day, according to John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

For the upcoming December 7 general elections, polling stations with over 700 names have been divided into two separate lists—A and B. This approach mirrors the EC’s 2020 strategy aimed at reducing long lines at polling stations.

However, following the latest 2024 voter registration updates and the public exhibition of the revised register last week, many voters found themselves having to visit multiple stations to locate their names.

The NDC has raised concerns after reviewing the Provisional Voters Register (PVR) provided by the Electoral Commission (EC) and has called for a meeting to address these issues.

During his campaign tour on August 28, 2024, Mahama criticized the EC for the “numerous anomalies” in the voter register. He warned that if these issues are not resolved, it could result in disorder on Election Day.

Mahama urged the EC to improve its performance to avoid confusion during the elections. He stressed the importance of the EC in ensuring a smooth and peaceful electoral process and cautioned that failure to address these problems could compromise the integrity of the elections.

He also highlighted additional problems, such as unconsented name transfers, unregistered proxies without biometric cards, and instances of multiple registrations.
