Popular Ghanaian actor and New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Prince David Osei has addressed recent speculation suggesting his political engagement is a result of a declining acting career. In an interview with GHOne TV, Osei dismissed such claims as “jokes” and reaffirmed his active involvement in the film industry.
Osei emphasized his continued success in acting, citing his recent project, Letter to Goddo, which has been nominated for the Toronto Film Festival. “I have been filming outside Ghana. My recent movie, ‘Letter to Goddo’, has been nominated for the Toronto Film Festival… So, if somebody tells me I’m doing politics because my career is dead, then that person is a joke,” he stated.
The actor also addressed why he appears more frequently in Nigerian films compared to Ghanaian productions. Osei explained that financial constraints often limit opportunities with local producers. “Sometimes over here, they can’t pay me. When I mention my price, they can’t pay. And sometimes I do favours for some of the directors I know. But mostly, you know, they can’t pay,” he said.
Osei reiterated that his political involvement with the NPP is driven by personal conviction rather than financial incentives. “People also have the perception that maybe it’s money. No. You can’t judge everybody and how they live. I’m not doing it for money or recognition or whatever. Nobody has given me any money for politics,” he clarified.
Earlier this year, Prince David Osei publicly endorsed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The endorsement was highlighted when Osei shared a photograph of himself with Dr. Bawumia, who is the NPP’s flagbearer.
