A devastating accident occurred early Sunday morning on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway at Ataabadze in the Central Region, resulting in the loss of at least 14 lives. The tragic incident involved two vehicles, an articulated lorry and a sprinter van, which collided near a curve by a school.
According to an eyewitness, the accident happened when the articulated lorry attempted to overtake another vehicle, while the sprinter van also tried to overtake at the same time. Unfortunately, both vehicles lost control in the curve, resulting in a fatal collision.
The eyewitness reported seeing six people at the scene who appeared to have died on the spot. Emergency services, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service, responded quickly to the scene to clear the wreckage and assist the injured.
The victims, both deceased and injured, were transported to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for treatment. Upon visiting the hospital mortuary, it was confirmed that ten bodies had been received, and Dr. Papa Kojo Mbroh, Head of the Emergency Unit, later confirmed that four more victims had succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total death toll to 14.
Sadly, a baby was among those who lost their lives in the accident, and nearly ten survivors were receiving treatment at the hospital. The sprinter bus was traveling from Mumford, near Cape Coast, to Takoradi, carrying mainly fishmongers and fishermen heading to the Sekondi Fishing Harbour when the accident occurred, sending shockwaves through the community.
