Police Constable Remanded Over Fatal Shooting

Police Constable Smith Gyekyi has been remanded in custody for two weeks following his arrest for shooting 25-year-old Stanley Ahadzi in a conflict over transport fare.

Constable Gyekyi appeared before the Adabraka District Court on Wednesday, where he was not required to enter a plea on the provisional murder charge.

The charge and case details were presented in court, and the prosecution requested further detention for ongoing investigation.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Ama Adomako Kwakye, agreed to the request and remanded Gyekyi, who appeared without legal representation. He is scheduled to return to court on September 9, 2024.

According to Chief Inspector Achana Apewah, the incident occurred on August 18, 2024, around 4:00 AM. Constable Gyekyi, who was off-duty and operating a ride-hailing service, shot Ahadzi at Koans Estate in Satellite.

The confrontation reportedly began when Gyekyi, driving a Matiz car, had a dispute with Esther Owusua, a witness and girlfriend of the deceased, over the fare.

Investigators found Ahadzi’s body at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. The Regional Crime Scene Team processed the area, and Ahadzi’s body was taken to the Police Hospital Morgue for an autopsy.

Constable Gyekyi turned himself in at the Amasaman Police Station, where his firearm was seized for examination.
