Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, Executive Director of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, has called on Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to affirm his commitment to peace by signing the peace pact proposed by the National Peace Council in advance of the December elections.
Asiedu Nketia has voiced reservations about the effectiveness of previous peace pacts, citing a lack of tangible outcomes and expressing concern over unresolved incidents from the 2020 elections, including the alleged deaths of eight NDC members at the hands of national security forces.
In a meeting with the National Peace Council on August 20, Nketia outlined specific conditions that the NDC wants addressed before endorsing the peace pact. These conditions include full implementation of recommendations related to the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
Despite these concerns, Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong has urged Nketia to prioritize peace. In a Wednesday interview, he emphasized the importance of democratic principles and adherence to peaceful processes.
“We urge our esteemed Chairman Asiedu Nketia to embrace the spirit of democracy and commit to accepting election results through legal and proper channels. The essence of the peace pact is to avoid street mobilizations, and we must all pledge to this principle,” Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong said.
