A tragic incident occurred in Denkyira Kyekyewere, Upper Denkyira East Municipality, on Wednesday, August 21, around 2:00 a.m. Kwabena Boateng, the Assemblyman for the area, shot and killed two suspected thieves on his cocoa farm.

The suspects, identified as 16-year-old Razak and 20-year-old Agyaku, had allegedly been stealing cocoa bags from the Assemblyman’s shed for some time. Despite reporting the thefts to the police, the suspects continued to steal, resulting in the loss of 35 bags of cocoa.

On the night of the incident, the Assemblyman allegedly caught the suspects attempting to steal again and fired at them, killing both instantly. Family members of the deceased have expressed shock and grief over the incident, with the mother of one of the suspects describing her son as a young man learning a trade.

She revealed that her son had been influenced by Agyaku, who had a history of theft, including stealing from a queen mother. The mother had even consulted a fetish priest to understand her son’s behavior, only to discover that Agyaku was the bad influence.

The Assemblyman has been arrested and is currently in police custody, assisting with the investigation into the incident. The incident raises questions about vigilantism and the limits of self-defense, as well as the need for effective law enforcement and community engagement to prevent such tragedies.
