The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has paid out a total of GH¢3.2 billion in benefits to its members during the first half of 2024.

This announcement was made by SSNIT Director-General Mr. Kofi Osafo-Maafo at the launch of the 2024 SSNIT Mobile Service (SMS) Week in Elmina.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo highlighted SSNIT’s crucial role in securing the future of Ghana’s workforce.

The trust has disbursed over GH¢2.8 billion in old-age pensions, GH¢15.6 million in invalidity pensions, GH¢51.5 million in old-age lump-sums, and GH¢258.6 million in survivors’ lump-sums.

To expand pension coverage to self-employed individuals and workers in the informal sector, SSNIT launched the Self-Employed Enrolment Drive (SEED).

This initiative has seen a remarkable 700% increase in membership, growing from 13,000 members to nearly 100,000 in a year.

While 60% of formal sector workers are covered by SSNIT, only 3.2% of self-employed workers are enrolled.

This disparity underscores the need for continued efforts to encourage more self-employed individuals to join the scheme.

SSNIT has also implemented measures to prevent pension fraud. By deactivating pensioners aged 72 and above who failed to renew their Pensioner’s Certificates, the trust has saved over GH¢550 million.

To enhance member services, SSNIT unveiled the new SSNIT Digital Bouquet. This suite of digital platforms includes a revamped website, an upgraded USSD platform, and the much-anticipated SSNIT Mobile App.

The launch of SSNIT Mobile Service Week, themed “Sign up with SSNIT today for a pension that pays you as long as you live,” was a call to action for self-employed individuals to secure their futures.

Mr. Osafo-Maafo urged all workers to take advantage of the services offered during the week-long event, which will see SSNIT staff deployed to 76 locations nationwide.
