The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has announced plans to sign Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with all potential governments ahead of the upcoming elections.
This move aims to protect the interests of GUTA members and ensure political parties honor their commitments if elected.
In a recent interview, GUTA President Dr. Joseph Obeng explained that, unlike previous elections, the association demanded a say in formulating party manifestos. “In the past, they would formulate their own manifesto and show it to us afterward. But this election, we insisted on factoring our input,” Dr. Obeng stated.
GUTA recognizes the importance of this agreement and aims to hold future governments accountable to its terms. “We want to ensure we are not taken for granted and can call the government to order if necessary,” he added.
GUTA has been vocal about the economic challenges faced by its members, including the depreciation of the cedi and rising freight charges.
The association has urged the government to sustain the economic gains achieved through the IMF program, as these are crucial for the business community.
Dr. Obeng also emphasized the need for greater accountability. “We want to have a formal agreement in place so we can refer to it if needed.
This will ensure proper accountability,” he said.
GUTA’s decision to secure formal agreements with political parties demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the interests of traders and ensuring their voices are heard in the policymaking process.
