The 14th edition of the Chale Wote Street Art Festival commenced on Monday, August 19, 2024, in Accra, with a silent procession through the Osu township, where participants wore all-white attire. The event began with a declaration at the Christiansborg Castle and the opening of the Shika Shika Art Fair in the Garden.
The first day of the festival featured a range of activities, including a royal music performance by the Osu Klottey School of African Music, a Dagara Music Centre performance, a Nyonmo Y3 Jen Cultural Group dance performance, film screenings, and conversations.
This year’s festival, themed “And Now An End To The Empire Of Horrors,” draws inspiration from Africa’s history in the Gulf of Guinea. The event aims to artistically explore the tales of fantastic and mortal gods from the region, examining their origins, death, and rebirth.
The one-week festival, running from August 19 to 25, will feature a multiplicity of counterhegemonic narratives through art and entertainment. Organizers also plan to include salons and knowledge-sharing labs with children and youth during the festival.

Last year’s festival saw a range of activities, including photo exhibitions, street painting, graffiti murals, interactive installations, street boxing, movie screenings, processions, design labs, and more. The 14th edition promises to be an amplified version of last year’s event.
The festival is organized by Accra [dot] ALT, in collaboration with Redd Kat Pictures and Chale Wote Street Art Project.
