Fare Dispute Turns Deadly: Officer Surrenders

A tragic incident occurred in Accra on Sunday, resulting in the death of a 25-year-old man at the hands of a police officer. Smith Gyekyi, an officer with the International Relations Directorate (IRD), surrendered to the Amasaman Police station after allegedly shooting and killing Stanley Ahadzi at Koans Estate.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 3:00 am when Gyekyi, who was operating a commercial Matiz vehicle, got into a disagreement with Ahadzi over the fare charged. Gyekyi had picked up a passenger, Esther Owusua, from Ablekuma Joma, who was headed to the Koans Estate area.

Upon reaching the estate, Owusua lost her way and called Ahadzi for assistance. When Ahadzi arrived at the estate gate, a heated argument ensued between him and Gyekyi over the fare. The situation quickly escalated, leading to Gyekyi allegedly pulling out his sidearm and shooting Ahadzi without provocation.

Crime scene investigators were promptly deployed to the scene after a distress call was made. Upon arrival, they found Ahadzi lying in a supine position with multiple gunshot wounds and blood covering his body. The investigators took charge of the situation, ensuring that evidence was preserved and witnesses were questioned.

The body of Ahadzi was transported to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, pending an autopsy. The police have begun an investigation into the incident, with Gyekyi being detained and his pistol seized as evidence.

The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, visited the deceased’s family on Sunday, August 18, and assured them that justice would be served. The police administration has promised a thorough investigation into the incident and has vowed to take appropriate action against the officer if found guilty.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among the public, with many calling for greater accountability within the police service. The police administration has urged calm and assured the public that the incident will be thoroughly investigated.

Gyekyi’s actions have been widely condemned, with many questioning how a police officer could resort to deadly force over a fare dispute. The incident has raised concerns about police brutality and the need for greater training and accountability within the service.

As the investigation continues, the police have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The family of Ahadzi has called for justice, and the public is eagerly awaiting the outcome of the investigation.

The incident is a tragic reminder of the need for greater accountability and training within the police service. The police administration’s swift response and assurance of justice are commendable, and the public will be watching closely as the investigation unfolds.
