Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze expressed his disappointment after a controversial refereeing decision denied him a spectacular goal in his side’s loss to Brentford.
Eze scored directly from a free-kick, but the goal was disallowed as referee Sam Barrott had already blown the whistle for a foul involving Will Hughes and Nathan Collins.
Despite the VAR’s inability to review the incident due to the whistle being blown before the ball entered the net, football pundits Micah Richards and Jamie Redknapp agreed that Hughes had not committed a foul.
Brentford went on to take the lead and eventually won the match 2-1. Eze revealed that the referee acknowledged his error after the game, saying, “He told me that he blew too early and made the mistake.” While Eze acknowledged the impact the decision could have had on the game, he emphasized the need to move forward.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner praised Barrott for admitting his error, stating, “By saying he made a mistake, he showed he is a great man.” The incident serves as a reminder of the potential impact of refereeing decisions in football matches.
