Former PM’s Daughter Becomes Thailand’s Leader

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of former Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra, has been elected as Thailand’s new prime minister at just 37 years old, making her the country’s youngest PM and second female leader.

She faces significant challenges, including reviving the economy and navigating the complex political landscape that has seen her family members deposed in the past.

Paetongtarn’s selection comes after the constitutional court removed former PM Srettha Thavisin from office.

She has big shoes to fill, with her father and aunt having previously held the position, only to be ousted by military coups or court interventions.

Paetongtarn has a background in business and politics, having joined the Pheu Thai Party in 2021 and becoming party leader in October 2023.

Her appointment brings fresh energy to Thailand’s leadership, but also raises questions about the future of the Shinawatra clan’s political dynasty.
