ECG Cuts Power to Kejetia Market Again Over Debt

  • The ongoing power issues at Kejetia Market are causing significant hardship for traders

The New Kejetia Market in Kumasi has faced another power cut by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) due to a substantial unpaid bill exceeding GH¢7 million.

This disconnection follows a prior agreement intended to resolve the debt, which ECG asserts has not been honored. The market previously endured a power outage in April 2024, which was restored after management pledged to settle the arrears.

Although a payment plan was established, ECG argues that the market has failed to comply with the terms.

Managing Director Edmond Kofi Duffuor has expressed frustration, asserting that the market has made substantial payments, including GH¢1.7 million of the GH¢9.7 million owed as of June.

Mr. Duffuor questioned the disconnection despite these efforts and stated that no other entities are being paid by the market aside from ECG. He also highlighted the high cost of running generators as a temporary measure.

Traders are urging the Local Government Ministry to step in and resolve the electricity issue to ensure uninterrupted market operations.
