John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has rejected Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam’s apology to Ghanaians for the economic hardship caused by the government. Mahama argues that Dr. Amin Adam, the Finance Minister, is not the right person to apologize for the hardship, as he was recently appointed to the position and is not responsible for the policies that led to the current economic situation.
Instead, Mahama demands that President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the leaders of the Economic Management Team, should take responsibility and offer the apology to Ghanaians. Dr. Amin Adam had apologized to Ghanaians during a town hall meeting in Accra on August 6, 2024, for the hardship caused by the government’s unpopular policies, including the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
The Finance Minister explained that the government needed the DDEP to restructure its debts and secure an IMF facility, and asked Ghanaians to forgive the government for the hardship caused. However, Mahama insists that Dr. Amin Adam’s apology is not sufficient, as he was not part of the team that engineered the policies that led to the economic hardship.
Mahama made these comments while on a campaign trail in the Volta Region on August 13, 2024, where he urged residents to vote out the NPP government despite any apologies offered. He emphasized that the hardship caused by the NPP government is enough reason for them to be kicked out of office, and that Ghanaians should not accept their apology.
Mahama also nicknamed President Akufo-Addo “Jack Toronto” and referred to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the “Head of the solid Economic Management Team”, emphasizing their responsibility for the economic situation. Mahama’s rejection of Dr. Amin Adam’s apology highlights the ongoing political tensions in Ghana, with the NDC flag bearer calling for accountability from the NPP government’s leadership.
