The Savannah Golden Tree Limited, in collaboration with the Global Shea Alliance and the Northern Regional Coordinating Council, hosted the World Shea Expo 2024 in Tamale, Ghana, from August 8-10, 2024.
The event, themed “Nurturing Growth, Empowering Communities,” aimed to promote the shea industry’s growth and sustainability.
Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture Alhaji Mohammed Hardi Tufeiru, representing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, highlighted the significance of the shea tree and fruit to West Africa and Ghana.
He emphasized the need for investment in research, domestication, and local processing to increase Ghana’s share in the global market.
The Expo brought together stakeholders, including the Tree Crops Development Authority, Ghana Export Promotion Authority, Ghana Cocoa Board, EXIM Bank, and the University for Development Studies.
Chief Adams Tampuri, Executive Director of the World Shea Expo 2024, emphasized the industry’s role in job creation, poverty alleviation, and environmental conservation.
The event showcased advancements in shea production, including the reduction of the gestation period from 25 years to 3-5 years, thanks to research by the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana.
The government’s objective is to promote shea domestication to unlock its economic potential in the north, similar to cocoa in the south.
The Expo aimed to foster growth, transformation, and partnerships in the shea sector, ensuring a brighter future for the industry and Ghana.
