Tanzanian police have reportedly arrested prominent politician Tundu Lissu and two other opposition Chadema officials, according to the party.
The arrests occurred on Sunday in Mbeya, on the eve of a planned rally to mark World Youth Day.
The police banned the rally, citing concerns about violence and referencing the party’s slogan, which they perceived as inciting unrest.
Chadema has condemned the arrests and demanded the immediate release of their leaders, members, and supporters.
The police have not officially commented on the arrests.
This development comes a year after President Samia Hassan lifted a ban on opposition gatherings and promised to restore competitive politics.
Tanzania is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary polls next year.
