The Assembly member for Denu in the Ketu South Municipality, Israel Bossman, has warned that residents may be forced to abandon electricity use if the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) fails to address billing system challenges. Residents recently protested against exorbitant monthly tariffs, claiming the ECG’s billing system in Denu is overcharging them beyond their actual consumption.
The protesters demanded a review of the billing mechanisms to ensure fair and accurate charges, citing financial hardship due to the high tariffs. Israel Bossman emphasized the need for immediate action, labeling the current situation as extortion that must be halted.
He urged the ECG to cease disconnecting customers and fix the poor billing system, also calling for an audit of some meters in the area. Bossman expressed concern that residents are taking loans to pay their electricity bills, highlighting the unsustainable nature of the situation.
He warned that if the issue is not addressed, residents may be compelled to stop using electricity altogether. However, the Public Relations Officer for the ECG in the Volta Region, Eunice Tweneboah-Kodua, claimed that the grievances of the consumers have been addressed.
She stated that management has worked on the issues raised by the residents, including those presented in a petition during a recent demonstration. Despite this, Tweneboah-Kodua acknowledged that the ECG is still looking into the matter to ensure that the concerns of the residents are fully addressed.
