Residents of the Anlo Beach Community in Shama District, Western Region, are facing grave uncertainty as powerful tidal waves continue to erode their homes and livelihoods.
More than 500 houses have been engulfed by the ocean, displacing many families who are now without shelter.
One affected resident shared his distress: “My family and I are staying with my brother after our house was destroyed. My wife has even moved to Kumasi because of the situation. We urgently need government assistance to secure temporary housing and build sea defenses to protect our community.”
Samuel Borlu, the Assembly Member for Anlo Beach, highlighted the escalating crisis, noting, “The tidal waves began affecting us in 1995-1996 but worsened significantly between 2017-2018, destroying about 500 homes in just one year. The impact is severe since our community relies on fishing, and the erosion of our shoreline is making it increasingly difficult to fish and sustain our livelihoods.”
Residents are urgently appealing for government intervention to safeguard their homes and restore their way of life.
