A deadly landslide triggered by heavy rains has claimed the lives of at least 13 people in the Wolaita area of southern Ethiopia.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
According to Samuel Fola, the zone chief administrator of Wolaita, over 300 residents have been evacuated from the affected Kindo Didaye district.
The number of missing persons remains unknown. Children are among the victims.
The regional government has launched a rescue operation amid fears of another potential landslide. The area is prone to such disasters during the rainy season, which typically lasts from July to mid-September.
This is the latest in a series of deadly landslides to hit the region. Last month, a massive mudslide in neighboring Gamo Gofa killed over 200 people, with the United Nations estimating the death toll could be as high as 500.
Landslides are a recurring problem in East Africa, with similar tragedies occurring in countries like Uganda and Kenya.
