President Akufo-Addo has declared that the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2024, will be his final challenge before retiring from office on January 7, 2025. Speaking at a banquet for senior citizens at Jubilee House in Accra, the President emphasized that serving two terms in office has been the greatest honor of his life.
He likened himself to former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor, who also served two terms, and expressed pride in his achievements, particularly navigating the country through the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President acknowledged the difficulties faced during the pandemic but expressed optimism about the economy’s recovery, citing Ghana’s status as one of the fastest-growing economies in the world before the pandemic.
He assured the senior citizens that his administration has done its best to restore normalcy and revive growth. President Akufo-Addo identified the December elections as his last major challenge, pledging to ensure peaceful and fair polls.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy and stability in Africa and the world. The President’s address was part of the events marking Founders’ Day on August 4, a public holiday that commemorates the contributions of Ghanaians who fought for independence from colonial rule.
Founders’ Day was introduced by President Akufo-Addo in 2018 as part of amendments to the Public Holiday Act, replacing Republic Day and the African Union Holiday. However, opposition parties have threatened to scrap Founders’ Day if they come into power, sparking debate about the holiday’s significance and relevance.
