Benjamin Azamati and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu have become the first Ghanaian sprinters to reach the semifinals of the men’s 100m at the Paris Olympics.
Azamati, Ghana’s record holder in the event, secured his spot with a second-place finish in Heat 1, clocking 10.08 seconds behind Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson.
However, the heat was marred by controversy when Great Britain’s Jeremiah Azu was disqualified for a false start.
Saminu also advanced to the semifinals with a third-place finish in Heat 7, posting a time of 10.06 seconds.
He trailed Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi and reigning Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs.
This historic achievement marks the first time both Azamati and Saminu have reached an Olympic semifinal.
They will compete in the men’s 100m semifinals on Sunday evening, aiming to make their mark on the global stage.
