A police station and adjacent property were attacked, and multiple vehicles set ablaze, during clashes between protesters and law enforcement in Sunderland.

Northumbria Police reported three officers injured, with two still receiving hospital treatment, and eight arrests made.

The disturbances occurred outside a mosque, where rioters threw beer cans and stones at police in riot gear.

The unrest follows the tragic killing of three young girls in Southport earlier this week, which has sparked widespread civil unrest across England.

Northumbria Police Chief Superintendent Helena Barron condemned the violence, stating that officers faced “serious and sustained” levels of aggression, which is “utterly deplorable.” A thorough investigation is underway to identify those responsible for any criminal behavior.

Some individuals in the crowd were heard shouting offensive slurs and chanting in support of far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, also known as Tommy Robinson.

Yaxley-Lennon’s social media account has promoted false claims about the alleged Southport attacker.
