The University of Cape Coast’s (UCC) governing council has terminated the appointment of Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Boampong was appointed in June 2020 for a four-year term, effective August 2020, which ended on July 31, 2024.
A notice from the governing council’s chairman, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, stated that the purported two-year extension of Prof. Boampong’s appointment is null and void. The notice cited a breach of the University’s Statutes on renewal of appointment of the Vice-Chancellor.
The governing council clarified that while Prof. Boampong’s appointment may be extended, no decision has been taken yet. The extension, if granted, would be for a maximum of five years beyond retirement age, but only applicable to his position as a university member, not as Vice-Chancellor.
The University’s Statutes have placed a limit on the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure, as stated in Statute 8.2. Prof. Boampong has been urged to apply for an extension if he desires, following the laid-down procedure.
The governing council will consider his application for a renewal of his term as Vice-Chancellor, subject to not exceeding his retirement age and adhering to the Constitution and University’s Statutes. The termination of Prof. Boampong’s appointment brings an end to his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of UCC, effective July 31, 2024.
