- The preliminary investigation suggests that the cause of death was suicide by hanging
- Local authorities are conducting a thorough investigation
Michael Ahiago, a retired pastor from the New Covenant Apostolic Church, is reported to have taken his own life by hanging.
The deceased, believed to be in his early 70s and a father of five, was discovered hanging on a mango tree in front of his house on Wednesday 31st July, 2024, at about 0530 hours.
Beatrice Ahiago, the widow, informed reporters that her husband left the house in the early morning while she was preparing porridge for sale, and she was unaware of his departure until she learned of the tragic discovery. She noted that there had been no apparent signs of depression before he left.
Apostle Paul Gidigasu, General Secretary of the Apostolic Vision Church International, who arrived at the scene, stated that Ahiago had been an active member of the Akatsi Senior Ministers Association up until his death. Gidigasu could not determine the cause of the incident but encouraged the family to stay strong in their faith.
At the scene, many residents, including church members, chiefs, and pastors, gathered to learn more about the incident. Edward Doe Adade, the local Assembly Member, expressed surprise at the pastor’s death and mentioned that notes were found with the deceased. He assured that the police would investigate the circumstances, although some witnesses suggested there was no foul play.
Ahiago, who had retired from his pastoral duties in 2021 at the Mafi Kumase branch of his church, is survived by his widow and five children—two sons and three daughters. His body has been taken to St. Paul’s Hospital Morgue by the Akatsi Police for further examination. The church leadership has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
