Thousands of Nigerians took to the streets on Thursday to protest against the soaring cost of living and the government’s economic policies.
Demonstrations erupted in the capital, Abuja, as well as in Lagos and other cities, with protesters demanding the reinstatement of fuel and electricity subsidies, among other measures.
The government responded by deploying armed security forces, leading to clashes and the use of tear gas to disperse crowds.
Despite the heavy security presence, protesters remained determined to voice their discontent with President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which have caused inflation to skyrocket.
Tinubu has defended his policies, arguing that they are necessary to stabilize the economy. However, critics contend that the burden of these reforms has fallen disproportionately on ordinary citizens, while politicians have failed to make significant sacrifices.
The protests come amid a broader crisis in Nigeria, including widespread insecurity and unemployment. The government’s recent introduction of a new minimum wage has been met with skepticism, as many Nigerians struggle to make ends meet.
