CSOs Demand Protection of Achimota Forest, Call for E.I 144 Reversal”

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in the climate change space are urging the Executive and Parliament to reverse legislation that permits forest reserve developments. The CSOs are demanding the immediate halt of Executive Instrument 144 and Legislative Instrument 246 (2), which declassified the Achimota Forest and other reserves across the country.

Awula Serwaa, coordinator for Eco-Conscious Citizens, argued that declassifying forest reserves is not in the country’s interest and must be stopped. She emphasized the need for an audit and removal of structures on Parks and Gardens lands, acquired for horticultural purposes, not commercial ones.

The CSOs are calling on the Cabinet to rescind E.I 144 and reverse the declassification of the Achimota Forest, and for Parliament to reverse LI 246 (2). Awula Serwaa highlighted the importance of forest reserves, citing the colonial administration’s foresight in preserving them for posterity.

She expressed concern about the increase in lung diseases due to developments and the need to protect the remaining forest reserves. Daryl Bosu, Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, also urged the Lands Minister to reverse the legislation and block attempts to reclassify forest reserves.

Bosu emphasized the importance of listening to citizens and stopping the demarcation of the Achimota Forest, citing its significance and the need to address air pollution. The CSOs are determined to protect the Achimota Forest and other reserves, and are calling on the government to take bold action to preserve these vital ecosystems.
