Vetting of Supreme Court Nominees Postponed
- The Appointments Committee has rescheduled the vetting of two Supreme Court nominees
- Opposition from the minority caucus led to the postponement
- The committee aims to reach a consensus on the vetting process
The Appointments Committee of Parliament has postponed the vetting of two Supreme Court nominees, Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong and Justice Sophia Bernasko Essah, to August 13, 2024.
The delay follows the committee’s suspension of its meeting on Tuesday, prompted by a leadership engagement and objections from the minority caucus. The opposition raised concerns about insufficient advertisement and short notice for the vetting process.
Patricia Appiagyei, Vice Chairperson of the Appointments Committee, addressed the media regarding the rescheduling.
“This morning, we were scheduled to vet the two presidential nominees for the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, there was a lack of clarity on the procedures necessary for a successful vetting process,” she explained. “As a result, we decided to suspend the meeting. After discussions and reaching a consensus, we have rescheduled the vetting for August 13, 2024. We expect that on this new date, all parties involved will be present.”
