Renowned Ghanaian gospel artiste Obaapa Christy has introduced a new initiative aimed at nurturing emerging talent in the music industry. To mark the second anniversary of her restaurant, Obaapa Essen, Christy has launched a contest titled ‘Sing Like Obaapa,’ designed to showcase and support three up-and-coming musicians.
Scheduled for August 5, 2024, the event will provide aspiring singers with a platform to perform Obaapa Christy’s songs, with the top performers given the chance to shine at the anniversary celebration of the eatery. Participants will initially perform for two minutes, with the number of contenders narrowed down to six based on their performances.
The selected finalists will then advance to a second round, where they will perform additional songs to demonstrate their talent. A panel of judges, including Noble Neketia, Fred Kyei Mensah, and Reverend Josephine Agyei, will then choose the top three winners.
According to Nana Kwame Darkwah, Obaapa Christy’s manager, the winners will receive a special recording opportunity. “Obaapa Christy’s management will write songs for the three winners, and will help them to record with a music producer of their choice,” Darkwah stated in an interview with myjoyonline.com.
The contest will be held at Obaapa Essen, located next to Fisherman’s House at Odorkor-Kaneshie.
Obaapa Christy, who has been a prominent figure in the gospel music industry for over two decades, is celebrated for her hit songs including ‘W’agye Me,’ ‘Yare Yeya,’ ‘Onto Nko,’ ‘Ma Enye Yie,’ and ‘The Glory.’
