Private legal practitioner Nana Obiri Boahen has called on the government to prioritize the completion of the Krofuom Market before the upcoming December 7 general elections.
Initiated in 2008 during former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s tenure, the market project has languished over the years, with successive administrations failing to fulfill their commitments to finish it.
The facility, which comprises more than two thousand stores, has remained incomplete for 15 years, severely affecting trade and commercial activities. Its timely completion is crucial for alleviating congestion in Kumasi’s central business district.
Currently, the market area is overrun by weeds and has become a haven for suspected criminals and drug addicts.
Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen suggested that transferring the project to a private investor could ensure its swift completion.
In an interview, he emphasized that completing the market should not be a challenge, particularly in an election year.
He cautioned against resorting to loans to finish the stalled project, expressing frustration over what he perceives as a lack of serious commitment to decentralization among Ghanaians.
Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahen underscored that effective governance of African countries is feasible but often complicated by policy decisions made by leaders.
He urged African politicians and intellectuals to consider his recommendations seriously.
