Inside Out 2 Becomes Highest-Grossing Animated Film of All Time

Pixar’s latest animated triumph, “Inside Out 2,” has secured its place as the highest-grossing animated film of all time, achieving this milestone just six weeks after its global cinema release.

The sequel to 2015’s beloved “Inside Out” has amassed a staggering $1.46 billion at box offices worldwide, surpassing the previous record holder, “Frozen II,” which earned $1.45 billion in 2019.

The film’s impressive box office earnings are expected to climb even higher with its upcoming release in Japan. “Inside Out 2” has also outpaced last year’s blockbuster hit, “Barbie,” which grossed $1.45 billion.

Despite its monumental success, “Inside Out 2” falls short of Disney’s 2019 remake of “The Lion King,” classified as live-action, which garnered $1.65 billion worldwide.

Currently ranked as the 13th highest-grossing film of all time, “Inside Out 2” continues to trail behind box office giants like “Avatar” with $2.9 billion and “Avengers: Endgame” with $2.7 billion.

In the United States, the film has earned $601 million, while international markets contributed a significant $861 million, including $61 million from the UK.

Production costs for “Inside Out 2” reportedly amounted to $200 million, excluding marketing expenses. The film’s triumph marks a significant rebound for Pixar, which navigated challenges during the pandemic, including releases straight to streaming services due to cinema closures.

The storyline of “Inside Out” and its sequel revolves around a group of characters personifying emotions within the mind of a young girl named Riley. In “Inside Out 2,” familiar characters like Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear are joined by new personalities such as Anxiety, Envy, and Embarrassment as Riley transitions into adolescence.

With its record-breaking success, “Inside Out 2” underscores Pixar’s enduring appeal and storytelling prowess in the competitive realm of animated cinema.
