The Minister for Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir Hammond (KT Hammond), defended his decision to exclude members of the Ghana Cement Manufacturers Association from a recent meeting with the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GCCI).
In an interview Minister Hammond explained that he asked the manufacturers to leave because they had previously declined a meeting due to his insistence on media presence. He emphasized, “Let it not be said that I never invited them or consulted them.”
“They refused to attend unless the media was excluded,” Hammond continued. “It would be hypocritical of me to allow them to participate in a meeting where the media was present after they had refused to meet under those conditions before.”
Hammond also suggested that the manufacturers’ actions could indicate collusion within the cement industry, particularly following his efforts to enact regulatory measures.
The incident gained attention after videos surfaced showing Hammond instructing the cement manufacturers to vacate the meeting room, asserting that his invitation was extended by the Chamber of Construction, not the Cement Manufacturers Association.
“I am straightforward in addressing issues,” Hammond asserted. “If critics call this undiplomatic, they should educate me on diplomacy because I cannot compromise on principles.”
Despite attempts by both associations to resolve the situation, Hammond remained firm in his decision, reflecting his uncompromising stance on transparency and procedural integrity in governmental engagements.
