Bawumia Promises Affordable Smartphones Through Credit Scheme, Charging ₵1 Monthly

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and presidential candidate, has unveiled a bold initiative aimed at making smartphones more accessible to Ghanaians if he assumes office as president.

At a recent campaign event, Dr. Bawumia outlined plans to collaborate with phone manufacturers to offer smartphones on credit, allowing citizens to pay as little as ₵1 or ₵2 per month.

“We will ensure mobile phones are within reach by partnering with manufacturers so Ghanaians can purchase them on credit, paying just ₵1 or ₵2 monthly,” Dr. Bawumia announced, stressing the importance of digital inclusivity in his administration’s agenda.

He highlighted that this initiative would significantly increase access to information and communication technology, narrowing the digital gap and empowering more Ghanaians to engage in the digital economy. The proposal forms part of a broader strategy to enhance the technological landscape and drive economic progress.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that access to smartphones is crucial in today’s world, offering opportunities for education, business, and social connectivity. He pointed out that many Ghanaians currently face barriers to owning smartphones due to high costs, a challenge his government aims to overcome with this innovative program.

“Owning a smartphone is no longer a luxury but a necessity. It opens doors for education, business, and staying connected with family and friends. By making smartphones affordable, we are not just boosting connectivity but also creating an environment where every Ghanaian can thrive in the digital era,” Dr. Bawumia remarked.

He further detailed that the initiative would involve partnerships with major phone manufacturers to ensure devices are affordable and come with favorable payment terms. Education on leveraging smartphones for personal and professional growth would also be integrated into the initiative.

Dr. Bawumia is currently campaigning in the Savannah Region, where he is expected to visit Bole, the hometown of his main rival, former President and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama. His presence in the region has consistently drawn large crowds, with growing support observed among NPP supporters in Bole.
