Congressional Republicans are intensifying their scrutiny of the Secret Service following a failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump, with a House committee hearing set to question Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday.
Republicans, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, are demanding answers and calling for Cheatle’s resignation or termination, citing security lapses at a Pennsylvania rally earlier this month.
Trump has stated that no one warned him of a potential threat before the incident, and his son Eric has blamed the Biden administration and Cheatle for the attempt.
The Secret Service has acknowledged modifying security arrangements due to staffing shortages, and lawmakers are investigating the agency’s response, including a bipartisan task force with subpoena authority.
Senators Ron Johnson and Richard Blumenthal are also conducting a joint investigation, and the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general is reviewing the incident.
