The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Volta Regional Office is marking a significant milestone in its history, having been established in 2004. The office was set up to regulate the activities of manufacturers and retailers in the region, in accordance with the Public Health Act, 851, 2012.
Prior to 2012, the FDA operated in two zones, with the Ashanti Regional office covering the Northern sector and the Accra office covering the Southern sector. The Eastern/Volta office was established in 2004, with Mrs. Nora Nakie Tei-Larbi as its first Regional Head, serving from 2004-2008. She was succeeded by Roderick Daddy Adjei (2008-2015) and Eugene Addo (2015-2018).
Some key founding employees include Eric Owusu, Regulatory Officer (2004-2009), Patience Ethel Nutakor, and Madam Betty Adjei, who served as administrator and caretaker from 2004 to date. Evans Tetteh retired in 2021 as a senior driver.
In 2018, Mr. Gorden Akurugu took over as head of the region, leading the office to win the FDA’s best-performing region award for three consecutive years. Under his leadership, the office institutionalized 24-hour border operations to prevent the import of unregulated products and expanded regulatory operations in the Volta and Oti Regions, resulting in increased revenue mobilization.
The Volta Region has been recognized as the best revenue mobilization team for three consecutive years. To celebrate its anniversary, the office has planned a series of activities, including a clean-up exercise, donation to the Ho Central Prison, media engagement, fun games, and other events.
The current administration has praised the efforts of the founding members and hardworking staff for their contributions to the growth of the Volta Regional Office.
