The re-appointment of Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson as Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is facing a legal challenge. An alumnus of the university, Kofi Clement Ohene Asare, has filed an order of interlocutory injunction at the Kumasi High Court to halt the second-term appointment, which is set to begin on August 1, 2024.
Ohene Asare alleges that the reappointment process, supervised by former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, Chairperson of the University’s Council, breached the university’s statutes. He claims that the procedure for appointment, which involves a seven-member Search Committee and the advertisement of the vacancy, was not followed.
In his application, Ohene Asare describes the conduct of the university and the governing council as “unlawful”, “illegal”, and “unconscionable”. He asserts that despite the illegality of the reappointment, Anin-Yeboah and Dickson are proceeding with the appointment, prompting his application for an injunction.
The Kumasi High Court is scheduled to hear the case on July 30, 2024, and deliver a ruling. If granted, the injunction could potentially block Prof. Dickson’s reappointment as Vice-Chancellor of KNUST.
