The 11-kilometer Somanya-Kpong Road in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region is finally undergoing construction by Generals Construction Limited. The road, which was previously asphalted in 2016, was severely damaged by heavy limestone trucks and has been in a state of disrepair since.
According to Mr. Eric Tetteh, Municipal Chief Executive for Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, the completion of the road will bring significant relief to the residents of Krobo. “The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, saw the road’s terrible impact during his visit to the area and assured us that the road would be fixed,” he said.
The road’s poor condition had made it difficult for public transportation and smaller vehicles to operate smoothly, but the construction is expected to change that. Nene Sakite II, Paramount Chief of Manya Krobo and President of the Eastern Region House of Chiefs, had previously appealed to President Nana Akufo-Addo to prioritize the construction of the road, citing its importance to the local economy.
“The road network needs immediate attention to prevent further damage,” the paramount chief said at the annual Ngmayem Festival in November 2023. “Motorable roads are crucial for promoting farming, tourism, and business operations in our area.”
Local drivers, such as Mr. Yaw Jabaah, are also eagerly awaiting the completion of the road. “I change my shock absorbers every two weeks due to the bad state of the road,” he said. “The construction will bring us great relief.”
The construction of the Somanya-Kpong Road is a significant development for the Yilo Krobo Municipality, and its completion is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and residents’ quality of life.
