Kwawu Afram Plains, July 17, 2024 – A group of cargo drivers, commercial drivers, and motorists took to the streets today to protest the deplorable state of the ferry and road network in the area. The region, known as the nation’s leading food basket, has been plagued by a lack of essential infrastructure, prompting the demonstration.
The protesters, carrying placards with messages such as “Fix the two engines of the ferry,” “Fix Afram bridge,” and “No more reverse on the ferry,” demanded government intervention to address the poor condition of the ferry and the bad road network from Kwawu Tafo to Donkorkrom.
According to participants, numerous calls to authorities to fix the issues have yielded no results. The demonstrators presented a petition to the District Chief Executive and Member of Parliament for Kwawu Afram Plains South, Joseph Appiah Boateng, and Evans Kyei Ntiri, respectively.
In response, the DCE promised to undertake road reshaping from Kwawu Tafo to Donkorkrom and assured that the government would collaborate with the Volta Lake Transport Company to resolve the ongoing challenges with the ferry.
The demonstration highlights the urgent need for infrastructure development in Afram Plains, ensuring safe and efficient transportation for residents and supporting the region’s crucial role in the nation’s food supply chain.
